Relics of War: Indian Heritage Centre

Publications of Azad Hind (Free India)

Located in Little India, the Indian Hertiage Centre carries many cultural items that were significant to the Indians in Singapore. However, few knew that during the Japanese Occupation, Singapore was considered a flashpoint for the soul of India during World War 2.

During World War 2, the Imperial Japanese had gathered up captured British Indian soldiers in their Malaya and Singapore Campaigns and offered them a choice to defect. Those who agreed would form the Indian National Army under Rash Behari Bose (an anti-British Indian revolutionary sponsored by the Japanese).

With campaigns against British Raj (British India) limited to the disputes in Burma and the Andaman Islands, Singapore was served as one of the headquarters of Azad Hind (Provisional Government of Free India) with the Indian National Army under its jurisdiction.

Thus it is little wonder that the items of the Indian National Army and the publications of the Azad Hind are available for view at the Indian Heritage Centre, testament to Singapore's colourful role in World War 2.
