If you walk down Esplanade Park in Singapore, you may notice a stone monument called the Cenotaph humble erected in a quiet area.
You may not expect it, but the Cenotaph is Singapore's first major war memorial.
World War 1
The inscription at the base of the monument reads "They died so that we may live". Originally dedicated to the 124 Singapore-born residents who fought and died for the British during World War 1.
Unveiled in 1922 by the Prince of Wales, it received a second dedication (with no names added) after World War 2. In 2010, the Cenotaph received National Monument status.
In 2013, a vandal was caught spraying words on the monument. This reinforced Singapore's commitment to ensure the importance of remembering the brave people who died in war.
