Casualties of War: Total Defence Day

Every 15 Feb, Singapore commemorates its 1942 surrender by hosting Total Defence Day. It serves as a daily reminder that the continued sovereignty of Singapore is the responsibility of the entire citizenry, instead of merely the military.

It highlights the six aspects of defending the nation:

Psychological Defence: Being resilient Singaporeans
Economic Defence: Ensuring a strong economy
Civil Defence: Being emergency-ready
Military Defence: Keeping a strong military
Social Defence: Living together in harmony
Digital Defence: Being responsible online

Every evening of Total Defence Day, a siren will sound to remind Singaporeans on the importance and type of emergency broadcast.

In the light of the Wu Han virus outbreak, Total Defence serves as a reminder that Singapore must be on its toes from external threats. The Fall of Singapore must never be repeated.
