Relics of war: The surrender room

One of the events that occured after the surrender of Singapore was the signing of the surrender documents. Even as a kid, I remembered how the assertive General Yamashita was in demanding terms of the meek General Percival.

General Yamashita would repeatedly hit the table with his hands, denying Pervcival any chance of negotiation. Percival in contrast, would cower with his men, and finally in resignation concede to the Japanese terms of surrender on 15 Feb 1942.

That moment is now captured at the Former Ford Factory. After all, this was the place where the British surrendered Singapore to the Japanese. In fact, when you enter the Former Ford Factory (located at Upper Bukit Timah Road), this is one of the first rooms you see when you enter the gallery.

A simple table is placed prominently in the centre of the room, with a British helmet at one end of the table, and a Japanese hat at the other. A video of the signing of the surrender documents is projected on the nearby war. All a solemn tribute to the surrender of Singapore.
